Police say the arrest was made after a patrol office spotted some suspicious activity on Vine Street. An arrest isn't a conviction.
A suspected drug dealer was jailed early Monday morning after Athens-Clarke County police officers found a bag of crack cocaine they believe was in his possession. According to police, a patrol officer saw several people hanging out around a fence on Pine Street shortly after midnight, and knowing it to be an area prone to crime and drugs, he pulled into the parking lot. The officer says he witnessed one of the men walk toward a stairwell at the corner of the building where there is no exit. When the man was asked what he was doing at the stairs, he denied being there, according to the officer. While one officer stood by with suspect, another searched the area of the stairs and found a clear, plastic bag underneath a piece of paper. Inside…
Police were called to the Bailey Street home Sunday night to investigate.
An Athens woman tells police she was upstairs in her Bailey Street home Sunday, May 19, around 10 p.m. when the lights began to flicker. Curious about what was happening, she crept downstairs to see what was going on. That's when she heard a back window shatter. Officers investigated and found that the back door had been kicked and a window had indeed been broken. Someone had also turned off power to the home at the meter. A Clarke County judge has rejected a request from William Wilson Heaton to remove his ankle monitor and move to Bartow County.
A Clarke County judge rejected a petition from the man accused of running over Emily Bowman in a hit-and-run accident to remove his ankle monitor and leave Oconee County. A judge last week denied William Wilson Heaton's request to remove the monitor and move to Bartow County with his grandfather, according to WSBTV. The news agency reports Heaton made the request so he could work in order to pay for his legal expenses. He must remain in Oconee County with his mother. Bowman, a former Kennesaw State University student and Woodstock High School graduate, was hospitalized in critical condition at Athens Regional Medical Center between Feb. 16 and March 8 when she was hit by a pick-up truck as she and a friend walked along Oak Street. Around 2:20pm on May 16m officers responded to a forgery in progress at Publix on the Atlanta Highway. An employee told police that a woman attempted to cash a check at customer service that was not in her name. The owner of the check was contacted and she said she did not know the person. When confronted with this information, the offender became irate and left the store. Officers located her outside and detained her. An investigation revealed the offender, Molly Lucille Allen, had several checks that had been stolen from a Winterville woman. Allen, 28, Briarwood Lane in,= Hull, was arrested and charged with Fourth Degree Forgery – Possession/Uttering Check under $1,500 and Fourth Degree Forgery – Possession of Less than 10 Checks.

A woman who wrote a suicide note with the intention of "blowing out her brains," ended up in Athens Regional getting a mental health evaluation. She got to the hospital because of Athens Clarke County Police Officer Robbie Cochran, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald. She called a 911 dispatcher close to 7pm on Wednesday to tell them she was going to kill herself with a gun, the story says. Officers who arrived at her home found family members outside, who told them the woman did indeed have a gun. They radioed for Office Cochran, who is known to be skilled at dealing with upset people. According to the newspaper story, he talked to the woman through an open window while her family tried to reach her on the telephone. …

David Austin Berry, 21, was so drunk on April 27 that he passed out in his truck after going through the drive-in at Krystal. According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, Berry then pulled over in the parking lot and slept for several hours. When he awoke, he couldn't find his wallet or his .357 Magnum revolver, so he fabricated a story to police about an armed robbery, fearing that if he told the truth he would be charged with DUI. The story he told police was that a man climbed into his truck when he was at Krystal with some friends and robbed him at gunpoint, the story says. When police later confronted him about the fake story, he confessed, and was charged with falsely reporting a crime, a misdemeanor.

At 2:54am on May 12, Athens Clarke County Police officers were patrolling on North Avenue when they saw a man standing in the driveway between two buildings. He appeared to be holding items in his arms. Investigation revealed the two objects were car/marine batteries, and the subject had laid them in the grass when the officers approached. The police talked with a resident at one of the buildings, and determined that the batteries had been taken from the porch of a North Avenue residence. Stanley Edward Smith of Linda Avenue was arrested and charged with Theft By Taking and Loitering and Prowling.

A member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity reported that between 3:30pm on May 8 and 5:45pm on May 9, his room at the fraternity House, located at 755 West Hancock Avenue, was entered through a damaged door. Various items of clothing, a watch, an Apple I-Pad, NetGear wireless router, ten PS3 games, five PS3 controllers and a Hewlett-Packard printer were stolen. Items stolen had a total value of $1,960.00.
