(This story was compiled from reporting by Terry Jernigan and Keith Farner.) Republican Chuck Williams, who presided over the closed North Georgia Bank and runs a tree farm in southern Oconee County, was the apparent winner Tuesday of a runoff election to be the next state Representative from Oconee County and parts of Clarke, Oglethorpe and Morgan. Unofficial returns showed Williams with a commanding lead over Democrat Dan Matthews. With 98 percent of precincts reporting, Williams had about 64 percent of the vote to Matthews' 36 percent. (Update: With the rest of Clarke in, it's now Williams by about 62 to 38 percent.) Turnout was about 25 percent higher in Oconee County than it had been in the four-way special election on June 21, and …

What's going on in local politics? Not much ... yet.
If you've got a storm cellar or sturdy interior room, I'd suggest you go ahead and stock it with provisions, because we're just a few weeks away from what's going to be a very interesting redistricting session in Atlanta. Nothing's official yet, but Athens, something tells me that a lot of you aren't going to be very happy when those new maps come out. Until that happens, and unless Mike Hamby, Kelly Girtz, and Andy Herod decide to undertake a hostile takeover of the fire department, it's the calm before the storm. So, here are a few scattered thoughts about local politics. Feel free to scream and shout in the comments section. About that special election: Things have gotten awfully quiet in the 113th House District, which is going to see…

Matthews, a Democrat, and Williams, a Republican, were the top two vote getters in Tuesday’s Special Election for the 113th District State House seat. They are campaigning for a July 19 runoff election.
As they prepare for a runoff election, Dan Matthews and Chuck Williams have shifted some of their campaign priorities to each other. Matthews, a Democrat, and Williams, a Republican, were the top two vote getters in Tuesday’s special election for the 113th District State House seat. Williams received 1,521 votes to lead the field of four candidates, while Matthews received 1,048. Republicans Sarah Bell and Alan Alexander were also on the ballot. Because Williams didn’t receive 50 percent of the vote, he and Matthews are campaigning to win a July 19 runoff. In an interview on Friday afternoon, Williams said the voters would decide if they would look at each candidate individually, or from more ideological differences. “If you look at …

Despite a strong showing, Democrat Dan Matthews still has a challenge ahead.
State-level Democrats are crowing today over an unexpectedly strong finish by their candidate, Dan Matthews, in Tuesday's special election for House District 113. On Wednesday morning, I got an effusive email in my inbox from state party chair Mike Berlon, who says, "Easy Republican wins are not a sure thing any more in these ruby-red areas of our state." In Georgia, where Democrats are an endangered species, just making a runoff is good reason to celebrate, and my sense is that Matthews did better than even optimistic observers would have thought. He deserves some credit for that, but the next four weeks are going to be a tough slog for Matthews in this 60-plus percent GOP district. Still, Matthews has a few things on his side. The nice …

Compiled from reports by Keith Farner, Terry Jernigan, Daniel Burnett and Rebecca McCarthy. Republican Chuck Williams and Democrat Dan Matthews will compete in a July 19 runoff for a state House seat representing Oconee County and parts of Clarke, Morgan and Oglethorpe, according to unofficial election returns. In a race with predicatably light turnout, Williams received 1,521 votes to lead the field of four candidates. Matthews received 1,048 votes, enough to force a runoff. Republicans Sarah Bell and Alan Alexander trailed with 719 and 632 votes, respectively. "Since we got in this race and we realized we were one of four candidates, particularly with three Republicans, everyone was saying mathematically, that it was almost impossible," …
A special election for House District 113 is underway today, calling for voters in portions of Clarke County to support their candidates. Polls close at 7 p.m.
Voters in Precinct 6C in Athens went to the polls at Timothy Road Elementary Tuesday to cast their ballots in the 113th District House Special Election. They were among a slow trickle of voters in Clarke and Oconee counties who swiped their voting cards on computerized machines and selected the candidate of their choice. “I am a Democrat, so I voted for the only candidate that represents my party,” said Mary Compton of Athens, referring to Dan Matthews. Republicans Sarah Bell, Alan Alexander and Chuck Williams round out the ballot. Jean Vamian of Watkinsville said she voted for Bell because “she is very involved in county politics, well informed and very active. I think she will make a great representative.” “I voted for Chuck Williams …

The four state House candidates made their case to voters ahead of Tuesday's special election.
With less than a week remaining in the campaign to replace Hank Huckaby as the representative of State House District 113, the four candidates discussed transportation, water and taxes among other issues at a forum on Thursday night. Alan Alexander, Sarah Bell, Dan Matthews and Chuck Williams answered questions at North Oconee High School in an event moderated by Tim Bryant of 1340 WGAU Radio. The forum, sponsored by the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce, had a crowd of about 70 people, somewhat smaller than the forum on June 8 at the Oconee County Library. But the candidates echoed many of their philosophies and beliefs of the last month. Bryant accepted questions from audience members, via e-mail and on Facebook. There were multiple …

To help voters choose among the four candidates for the 113th District House seat representing Oconee and parts of Clarke County, Patch asked candidates to respond to questions on the role of government, K-12 education, UGA and higher education, economic development, and taxes. Election Day is June 21, and early voting runs through June 17. Question 1: Where should most of the state’s revenue come from? ALAN ALEXANDER: For the fiscal year that ends June 30, state revenue is up approximately 8 percent, or $1.02 billion including a nearly 10 percent rise in individual income tax collections and a 6 percent rise in both sales taxes and corporate income taxes. This is good news. Now would be a good time to take a serious look at other options …
