Let's Celebrate! The Athens Clarke County Library' Turns 100.....and It's Finished!

A slew of April activities will mark the library's birthday, beginning with a Family Fun Day on Saturday.

The Athens-Clarke County Library will celebrate two major milestones in April with a whole month of special programs and events. April marks the end of the library’s long-running construction project, and this year is also the Library’s 100th anniversary. In 1913, the Athens Library Association received its charter. For 1 cent per day per item, Athenians could borrow from the small collection of 500 books, which was housed in a room in the Athens Railway and Electric Company Building. The small library had 200 registered readers. The 1 cent per day fee helped pay for the rebinding of books and the purchase of new books. Most of the books in this first library were fiction, but there were both a small reference section (which contained a …

These Books are to be Tasted and Enjoyed at the Athens Clarke County Library

Yumm! Some of these books will no doubt be devoured.

As Sir Francis Bacon once said, “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and the other few to be chewed and digested.” Here at the Athens-Clarke County Library, we take these famous words quite literally as the inspiration for our upcoming Edible Book Contest, a part of our 100th Birthday Celebration! Have your cake and eat it, too, while submitting an original edible creation based on a fictional or non-fictional work or character. Those wishing to enter the contest must submit an entry form by Saturday, April 6. The judging will take place on Saturday, April 13, at 1:00 p.m., with prizes going to first and second place winners in each category. Categories include Best Children’s, Fiction, and Nonfiction Book, and a People’…

Athens Clarke County Library Officials Ask Commissioners for Budget Increase

The library was one of several independent agencies making their case before the ACC Commission Thursday night.

There's one way for the Athens Clarke County Library to reduce its budget by 2 percent: it can close on Thursday afternoon at 1pm instead of staying open until 9pm as it now does. That's the least painful scenario for the well-used facility, said Dennis Hopper, chairman of the library board. Hopper and library director Kathy Ames were speaking to the Athens Clarke County Commissioners Thursday night as budget hearings begin for the local government. The library was one of several agencies coming before the Commissioners and Mayor Denson. has been expanded to meet the needs of its growing, diverse group of patrons in a digital age. The 2005 SPLOST funds used for the expansion and upgrade have increased the size of the building by 33 …

Athens Clarke County Library Moves Closer to Completion in Athens, Ga.

The grand opening isn't until April, but patrons can already see the many changes as construction winds down.

There are meeting rooms, offices for library staff and a new mechanized book return system. There's a vending area with tables and chairs and an outdoor patio. The library store is larger. And there are computers galore, a much larger Heritage Room, a more central reference desk. The children's area is bright and happy and the storytime room is almost twice as large. Books that have been in storage are emerging. The chairs are comfy, the light is good, even the carpet is cool. The $10.2 million price tag is covered by $8.2 million in 2005 Special Purpose Local Sales Tax funds and a $2 million grant from the State of Georgia.  The new checkout system and the materials will be covered by 2011 SPLOST funds. Designed by architect David Moore…

Trolls Come to Lay Park for Athens Clarke County Library Puppet Show

The Athens, Ga., library offers a puppet show suitable for all ages.

Trolls can sometimes create a lot of trouble, but they are no match for Treva! This year’s Winter Puppet Show Week features “Trouble with Trolls,” based on the beautifully illustrated children’s book of the same name by writer and illustrator Jan Brett. The Athens-Clarke County Library invites children of all ages to join our golden-haired Norwegian heroine as she tries to outsmart the mountain trolls. They are determined to capture her dog and keep it for their very own. Alas, the trolls soon learn, as must everyone, that they cannot simply take whatever they want, especially when it belongs to someone else. This wintry tale teaches respect for others’ belongings while entertaining the audience with a work that demonstrates both bravery…
