Crime Blotter

Buglaries, some successful and others not, were the order of the day.

Burglaries and more burglaries seem to be the crime de jour in Athens these days. If people aren’t succeeding, they’re constantly trying to break into someone’s house and make off with electronics and other goods.  Between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on May 28, someone tried to break into the Clarkewoods Rd residence of Ashlee Arroll Wegmann. She reported the incident on May 30.  Antonette McKinney of Lexington Road is in the process of moving out of her former house. Between 8 p.m. on May 15 and 6 a.m. on May 30, a laptop, fireplace tool stand, lamps, camera, decorative items and books were stolen from her old residence on Highland Park Drive. Delivery man robbed, and others as well.

This information comes from the ACC Police Department. Roommates Now Accused Burglars. Brittney Kayleen Johnson and Steven Samuel Sutherland said when they returned to their Gaines School Road residence around 5 p.m. on May 26, they found their other roommates in their room. The offenders were going through items without their permission. Wesley Aaron Hogan, 18, and Chelsea Ann Renee Adams, 18, were arrested and charged with Burglary. Late-night pedestrian robbed at gunpoint.  Benjamin Kyle O’Connell of South Peter Street said he was walking home around 3 a.m. on May 26. Near the Oak St intersection, O’Connell was approached by a black male, who pointed a gun at him and demanded the contents of his pockets. O’Connell gave him his cell …

One dead body, one armed robbery and thieves keep Athens police busy.

 At approximately 4:10 p.m. on May 24, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department received a 911 call of a "man down" in Dudley Park. This park is on the Oconee near downtown. Officers found a dead man lying on the ground near the bottom of the railroad trestle. Preliminary investigation reveals the individual may have fallen or possibly jumped from the trestle. The body was identified as that of Richard O. Sabine, Jr., age 22, of 197 Woodrow St. The body has been transported to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy. Around 10:50 p.m. on May 24, an officer on patrol saw a vehicle parked at a Vine Street apartment building. There were two people inside.
