Lights Flicker, Window Shatters as Burglar Attempts to Break into Athens Woman's Home

Police were called to the Bailey Street home Sunday night to investigate.

An Athens woman tells police she was upstairs in her Bailey Street home Sunday, May 19, around 10 p.m. when the lights began to flicker. Curious about what was happening, she crept downstairs to see what was going on.  That's when she heard a back window shatter. Officers investigated and found that the back door had been kicked and a window had indeed been broken. Someone had also turned off power to the home at the meter. Wanted Assault and Robbery Suspect Turns Himself In

Rickie Korey "Woo" Powell surrendered to the Clarke County jail on Tuesday, police said.

A man wanted in Athens on robbery and assault charges surrendered himself to the Clarke County Jail Tuesday afternoon, police said. Rickie Korey "Woo" Powell is accused of assaulting an Athens-Clarke County uniformed officer during a robbery of the BP Gas Station located at 4000 Lexington Road last Thursday, April 18. Following the incident in Athens, Oconee County Sheriff's deputies with permission searched a relative's home on Farmington Road, Powell's last known address, but did not locate him there, according to an incident report. Authorities launched a public search for Powell Saturday afternoon and Crime Stoppers offered a reward for tips leading to his arrest.

Police Searching for Man Accused of Robbery, Assaulting Officer

Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension of Rickie Korey "Woo" Powell. Police say he "should be considered violent and dangerous."

Police are searching for a man they say assaulted an Athens-Clarke County officer with a vehicle during the robbery of BP Gas Station at 4000 Lexington Road on April 18. There are active warrants in Rickie Korey "Woo" Powell's name for robbery by force, aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer, and obstruction, police said. According to a Nixle alert, Powell's last known address was Old Farmington Road in Bishop. "He is known to frequently visit Clarke County to include the areas of: Bailey Street; Epps Bridge Road; Martin Circle; Milledge Avenue; Whitehall Road; Downtown," the alert states. Police Looking for Gold Honda Accord with Black Duct Tape on Rear Bumper

Athens-Clarke County Police say the car was spotted near the scene of a burglary on Kings Road Monday.

Athens-Clarke County Police are looking for a 1990s model gold Honda Accord that witnesses placed at the scene of a burglary on Kings Road around 7:15 p.m. on Monday, April 15. A neighbor told police he saw a man climb into the passenger's side of the car driven by another man. That witness described the occupants as black men in their 20s, but another witness thought one of the two was a woman, according to police. The car had what appeared to be black Duct tape on parts of the rear bumper, according to the Nixle alert. When the resident arrived home, police say he determined a TV and laptop valued at $2,000 had been stolen. Anyone with information about the car or its occupants is asked to call 911.

UPDATE: Elderly Man Reported Missing in Athens Found

Athens-Clarke County Police say 79-year-old Alfred Killian has been located.

The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is asking for the public's help in locating a missing person. The following Nixle message was sent around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, April 14, 2013: Be on the lookout for missing person Alfred Killian, black male, 79 years old, approximately 5'11" 200 lbs. Killian last seen driving a faded red 1991 GMC Sonoma, unknown tag number. Last seen in the area of Ebenezer Baptist Church on North Chase Street. Please call 911 if spotted.

Man Beaten, Robbed at Girlfriend's Athens Home

Police say a woman returned to her Zebulon Drive residence to find missing electronics.

A man responding to a knock on the door at a Zebulon Drive residence was rushed by several strangers who took a video game system and television, according to a media release from Athens-Clarke County Police. A woman told police she returned home on Monday to find her boyfriend on the floor bleeding from his lip. He said he was awakend by knocking, and when he opened the door a man was standing with his back to the door. When he opened the screen door, he was rushed and a fight ensued. The boyfriend told police he believed four men were involved with the robbery. The stolen electronics were valued at $446. Athens Man Dies in Two-Car Collision

The fatal accident happened around 5 p.m. Monday on Tallassee Road.

A 49-year-old Athens man was killed Monday when his car struck another car stopped at a red light along Tallassee Road, Athens-Clarke County Police said. Mark Anthony Ellis of Winterberry Lane was driving a 1991 Honda Accord eastbound on Tallasee Road around 5 p.m.  At the intersection of Westchester Drive, the 2011 Nissan Cube driven by Killick Hinds, 40, of Three Oaks Drive was stopped at a red light when it was struck from behind by Ellis' vehicle, police said. EMS responded and transported Ellis to Athens Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to a news release, and Hinds was treated for injuries at the hospital. The investigation continues, police said. The road was closed until about 6:15 p.m. Monday.

Pit Bull Attacks, Seriously Injures Boy in Athens, Ga.

The 8 year old suffered serious injuries Saturday afternoon and was flown to Egleston Hospital in Atlanta, according to police.

An 8-year-old boy suffered "very serious injuries" after being attacked by a pit bull at an Athens home on Saturday, Athens-Clarke County police said. Officers were called to a Hidden Lake Drive address shortly before 1 p.m. where the child had been bitten multiple times, according to a news release. The boy was life-flighted to Egleston Hospital. "The boy and his older brother were visiting the home of a family friend and had been playing with the homeowner's dog," the release stated. "As the two boys began to wrestle, suddenly the dog became excited and bit the eight year old multiple times causing very serious injuries." The brother wasn't harmed, police noted. The dog is in the custody of Athens-Clarke County Animal Control.   …

Athens-Clarke Officers Take Part in 2013 Night of Blue Lights [Photos and Video]

The event Saturday at Oconee Veterans Park raised awareness and money for the Georgia Chapter of Concerns of Police Survivors.

From a SWAT tank to motorcycle units, law enforcement vehicles of all types were on display at Oconee Veterans Park on Saturday for the 3rd Annual Night of Blue Lights. Dozens of agencies were represented at the event, presented by Oconee County resident Lee Dyer in cooperation with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office and Watkinsville Police. It served to remember fallen officers and show support to their families. The crowd enjoyed live music, boiled peanuts and burgers while mingling with officers. Kids slid down a giant slide, climbed onto a fire truck and a helicopter and lined up for balloon animals, guitars and motorcycles from Up N' Away Balloons.
