Notorious murder in downtown Athens remains unsolved.
It happened early one April morning, 20 years ago--a day that began breezy and cool, much like today. A University of Georgia student, on the brink of graduation and a promising advertising career, was robbed, sexually assaulted and strangled in her downtown Athens house, two blocks from campus. In 1992, downtown Athens was transitioning from a sleepy retail center to a bustling residential and entertainment district. The crack trade still thrived at night in some Athens side streets, but it was possible by day to window shop along downtown’s tree-lined main streets and have no idea of any illicit activity on the district’s fringes. Here are the latest reports from the Athens-Clarke County Police: Firefighter turnout gear valued at $2,270 was stolen from a garage at Athens-Clarke County Fire Station No. 8 on Jefferson Rd. on the night of Feb. 23. A Lexington Heights residence was burglarized overnight between Feb. 22 and Feb. 23. A TV valued at $200 was stolen. On the afternoon of Feb. 22, a North Lumpkin Street residence was burglarized. Laptops valued at $2,000 were stolen. A Ruth Street residence was burglarized between the night of Feb. 23. A TV, jewelry, and laptop with a total value of $1,650 were stolen. Air conditioner units valued at $4,200 were stolen from a Baxter St. location overnight from Feb. 22 to Feb. 23. An Athens driver was cited for following …

Someone is breaking into Fastenal stores from Douglas County to Clarke County and beyond. At least 16 stores from the Minnesota-based construction supply chain have been burglarized in Georgia and one in South Carolina in recent weeks in a spree that almost looks as if someone’s filling a shopping list, WSB-TV reported. The value of the items stolen totals about $17,000, WSB said. Stores have been hit in Marietta, Kennesaw, Lithia Springs, Cumming, Norcross, Lawrenceville, Tucker, Athens, Watkinsville and Augusta, among other Georgia cities, and the thief or thieves also struck Aiken, SC.
