Athens Today--June 1

Hello, June, and not too soon!

  More people are married in June than any other month. It's also the official start of the Atlantic Hurricane Season and the official state of summer. Two American Revolutions began in June: one on Bunker Hill and one on a baseball diamond.  The Classic City Band plays at the State Botanical Garden. THey will offer at patriotic concert from 3 to 4pm. Want to get outdoors and exercise your arms? Try a night paddle from 9 to 11pm on Sandy Creek's Lake Chapman. You can bring your own canoe or rent one there. The cost is $12 for a family. To register, call 706-613-3631. Prefer to exercise your legs? 1. You can register today for the Inaugural Earth Fare 5k, a race to benefit the Athens Mothers’ Center. The 1-mile Fun Run will take place on June 9, 2012 at 8am, followed by the 5k at 8:30am. 2. The Athens Clarke County Senior Center, now known as The Center for Active Living, provides learning opportunities to engage older adults (50+) by offering unique social, cultural, educational, and wellness-related classes and activities. Transportation Advocates Form Citizens' Group

"Complete streets" approach emphasizes safety, multifaceted approach to transportation.

A handful of transportation-minded Athenians met in downtown Athens Wednesday night with the goal of eventually asking Athens-Clarke County commissioners to approve the formation of a citizens' advisory council on transportation issues. Amy Johnson, the group's organizer and a member of the BikeAthens Board of Directors, emphasized the importance of solutions that incorporate a variety of forms of transportation. "Sidewalks, bike lanes, cars, transit - all of these things need to operate safely," Johnson said.
