Charles Darwin Supporters Protest Rep. Paul Broun at UGA Arch

The group gathered to encourage Athens, Ga., voters to write in Charles Darwin instead of voting for Broun, who has made recent religious comments saying evolution is a lie "straight from the pit of hell."

Charles Darwin stood in front of the University of Georgia Arch Friday, waving a cane pointedly at passing buses. A few times, he wiped his brow, moving his bowler as he did so, and lifted his sign slightly above the stoop of his shoulders. "Vote for me for Congress," Tim Denson, dressed as Charles Darwin, rasped above the rumble of engines. "Don't let Paul Broun make a monkey out of you." Denson was one of several people who put together the first "Charles Darwin for Congress" protest. After UGA Plant Biologist Jim Leebens-Mack started a Facebook page encouraging voters to write in the famous scientist's name in protest of Republican 10th District U.S. Rep. Charles Darwin Enters Race Against U.S. Rep. Paul Broun

A 5 p.m. Friday rally at the UGA Arch will support a write-in campaign for Charles Darwin, in protest of Georgia 10th District U.S. Rep. Paul Broun's recent comments about evolution and science.

  Scientist Charles Darwin is making a posthumous write-in run for Congress. And today, his supporters will help his campaign by criticizing his biggest opponent — U.S. Rep. Paul Broun. "Charles Darwin for Congress," a group formed in response to comments the 10th District Georgia Republican made in September about evolution and the Earth's creation, will be protesting Broun's inclusion on the House Science Committee today at the University of Georgia Arch. The protest was started by Athenian Tim Sarassa. The group will be handing out flyers informing voters of Broun's statements and encouraging them to write Darwin's name in on Election Day.
