Suspected Forged Checks Leads to Arrest

Around 2:20pm on May 16m officers responded to a forgery in progress at Publix on the Atlanta Highway. An employee told police that a woman attempted to cash a check at customer service that was not in her name. The owner of the check was contacted and she said she did not know the person. When confronted with this information, the offender became irate and left the store. Officers located her outside and detained her. An investigation revealed the offender, Molly Lucille Allen, had several checks that had been stolen from a Winterville woman. Allen, 28, Briarwood Lane in,= Hull, was arrested and charged with Fourth Degree Forgery – Possession/Uttering Check under $1,500 and Fourth Degree Forgery – Possession of Less than 10 Checks.

ACC Police Officer Talks Woman Out of Shooting Herself

Officer Robbie Cochran is known to be skilled at talking to people when they're distressed.

  A woman who wrote a suicide note with the intention of "blowing out her brains," ended up in Athens Regional getting a mental health evaluation. She got to the hospital because of Athens Clarke County Police Officer Robbie Cochran, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald. She called a 911 dispatcher close to 7pm on Wednesday to tell them she was going to kill herself with a gun, the story says. Officers who arrived at her home found family members outside, who told them the woman did indeed have a gun. They radioed for Office Cochran, who is known to be skilled at dealing with upset people. According to the newspaper story, he talked to the woman through an open window while her family tried to reach her on the telephone. …

Stolen Batteries Lead to Suspect's Being Charged

  At 2:54am on May 12, Athens Clarke County Police officers were patrolling on North Avenue when they saw a man standing in the driveway between two buildings. He appeared to be holding items in his arms. Investigation revealed the two objects were car/marine batteries, and the subject had laid them in the grass when the officers approached. The police talked with a resident at one of the buildings, and determined that the batteries had been taken from the porch of a North Avenue residence. Stanley Edward Smith of Linda Avenue was arrested and charged with Theft By Taking and Loitering and Prowling.

Kappa Alpha Fraternity Room Robbed

  A member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity reported that between 3:30pm on May 8 and 5:45pm on May 9, his room at the fraternity House, located at 755 West Hancock Avenue, was entered through a damaged door. Various items of clothing, a watch, an Apple I-Pad, NetGear wireless router, ten PS3 games, five PS3 controllers and a Hewlett-Packard printer were stolen. Items stolen had a total value of $1,960.00.

Cyclist Attacked, Robbed, Treated for Injuries

His alleged assailant was arrested for battery and obstructing an officer.

  A man riding his bicycle on Reese Street in the early evening this week was allegedly assaulted and attacked by Michael Ray Ratcliff, 42, of North Billups Street. The bike rider told police he was riding near the park on Reese Street on Wednesday at about 6:15pm when Ratcliff approached him and asked for money, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald. He told Ratcliff he didn't have any money and pedaled away, but Ratcliff chased him and pushed him from behind, the story says. The rider fell and broke his finger. He told police he was unconscious after he fell, but he saw Ratcliff take $25 from his pants. Ratcliff allegedly pushed him down a second time and punched him in the face, the story says. May I Flatten Your Tires, Officer?

Man arrested in downtown Athens who allegedly tried to deflate the bicycle tires of a downtown police officer.

  An allegedly intoxicated man was arrested Friday morning after a downtown fight for supposedly trying to deflate a police officer's bicycle tire. Walter Lee Brown, 30, of The Preserve, was part of a crowd that had gathered at the corner of Jackson and Washington around 2am Friday, according to a story in the Athens Banner Herald.  When the officer arrived, he saw people pushing each other and saw a woman knee a man in the groin and hit him, the story says. The woman told the police officer the fight began when a man had grabbed her, but that story wasn't corroborated by other people, according to the Athens Banner Herald. Man Runs from Probation Officer, Allegedly To Distribute Cocaine

  Around 10:20pm on May 1 probation officers had a subject run from them on Cone Drive. ACCPD officers responded to assist but when they arrived the subject, Albert Collins, Jr., was already in custody. Investigation revealed when the probation officers arrived at the residence, they saw Collins walk behind a pick-up truck in the driveway. He appeared to be trying to hide something in the bed. When the officers approached him, one saw a small plastic baggie hanging out of his pants pocket. A pat down of Collins revealed a large sum of money, several plastic baggies, and a syringe. The officer then found several small plastic baggies of a white substance, which appeared to be cocaine, in the bed of the truck. When the other officer reached …

Rifle-Toting Student Answers Door, Burglar Runs Away

Police say the 25-year-old UGA student scared away the burglar.

  It's become a familiar tactic by burglars in Athens: they ring the front doorbell or knock, and if no one's home, they kick in the door and take what they want. Only this time, things didn't work out that way. According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, a 25-year-old UGA student was napping in the bedroom of his Old Winterville Road home when he heard someone ringing the doorbell near the front door. He didn't want to get up, but he did after he heard the bell ring repeatedly and then heard banging. He went to the door and heard a man's mumbling voice, the story says, so the student rushed back to his bedroom and returned with a Marlin rifle. At which point, the would-be burglar fled. Man Arrested for Rape and Battery

  An officer met with the 33-year old victim near the College Avenue and Willow Street intersection around 5:30am on Monday, April 29. The victim told the officer she had been riding around with the offender she knew by first name. Around 4:30am while travelling down Pulaski St, the offender pulled over, produced a box cutter, and instructed her to remove her pants. When she refused, he struck her in the face. She then complied and he raped her. After the assault, he drove to the area of Willow Street and College Avenue and dropped her off. She began walking and met up with a friend. Fight Escalates Into Assault With Car

The information in this story comes from the ACC Police Department. An arrest isn't the same as a conviction.

  At approximately 2:45am on April 28, a husband and wife, who live on Jasmine Trail, stopped at the Kangaroo Station at 990 Prince Avenue. While there, the wife became involved in an altercation with another female who she knows. The confrontation escalated to a physical fight. Some others at the scene broke up the fight. The wife was walking back to her vehicle when she was struck a car driven by the subject she had been fighting with and knocked to the ground. Afterwards, the car backed up, then proceeded to run over the injured woman a second time before fleeing the scene. She was transported by her husband to the hospital for treatment of injuries to both legs.
