The 2012 Marine Corps Marathon: Athens Resident Denise Horton Rocks It!

The long-time runner and UGA employee finished the iconic race, boosted by her daughter, Rachel Horton Carpenter.

  I’ve decided that rather than relating this story in bits and pieces over the course of the next several days and weeks, I’ll try to tell it in a single, somewhat chronological, narrative. Feel free to jump forward to the juicier parts that are near the end. I ran the 2012 Marine Corps Marathon as a “St. Jude Hero,” which meant that in exchange for raising $1,200 for St. Jude, I would gain entry to the marathon, which closed out in a mere 2½ hours. Due to the generosity of so many friends and colleagues, I quickly surpassed my goal and raised something closer to $1,500, which is really exciting and I want to thank everyone who donated to this terrific cause. I had to laugh when I read that you would be on hold for 9 to 12 hours. I have a marathon coming up in three weeks and I hope that I have no reason to talk to the medics. Though I'm afraid I may have to put the MCM on my must-do-someday list.   more ›
