The event will start at 6:30pm in the Grand Hall of the Classic Center.
Here are some of the high points of the Downtown Master Plan thus far. UGA landscape architecture professor Jack Crowley outlined them to the board of the Athens Downtown Development Authority Tuesday afternoon: *A greenway along Jackson Street connecting downtown to Lay Park and the Lyndon House *A 17-feet wide commuting cooridor along the abandoned Georgia Railroad bed, including the restored/rebuilt Murmur Trestle *A traffic circle and cross walk at Dougherty and Thomas streets *A median on Oconee Street And to fund the $150 million in improvements, Crowley urged the board to recommend that the ACC Commission create a tax allocation district, or TAD, for the area of town that includes Poplar over to Oconee Street on one side, to the …

UGA Professor Jack Crowley tells the ADDA that things are going well for the Athens, Ga., plan.
So you didn't make the town hall meeting on the master plan for downtown Athens in November. The room at the Classic Center was full, but you weren't one of the horde. Nor have you met in small groups with one of the graduate students helping UGA professor Jack Crowley take the pulse of the community on how they want downtown to develop for the next 20 years. Don't worry. Jack Crowley still wants to hear from you. Like, today. You can share your ideas and opinions on line. And you may keep doing so up until the Mayor and Commission adopt the plan sometime later this year. What about making an arts district north of Dougherty? Speaking of streets, what about making Dougherty one way? Or extending Pulaski all the way to Florida Avenue? Why not get rid of that parallel parking around City Hall? These are some of the ideas UGA professor Jack Crowley has gleaned from his hours of talking with various Athenians over the past few weeks. He shared some of them with the board of the Athens Downtown Development Authority on Tuesday at its monthly meeting. The board has hired him to create a master plan for downtown--which first meant determining what, exactly, is …

Happy Tuesday!
Happy Juneteenth! It's the biggest commemoration of the end of slavery in the country. On June 19, in 1865, Major General Gordon Granger landed with his troops at Galveston, telling the people that the Civil War was over and slaves were free. Today at the ACC Library, it's Storytme for toddlers, infants and their caregivers. The wonderful and experience children's librarians share books, stories and often puppet performances with young book lovers. Things start shaking at 9:30am and again at 10:30am. Get your tickets now at the Morton Theatre for the Flagpole Annual Music Awards on Thursday at 7:30pm. It's a good way to get ready for the AthFest events which will follow the next few days. Tickets are $10 at the door or $5 with an AthFest…

What about increased hours for Athens Transit? A lot of us on the Eastside cannot afford vehicles to get to and from work/school.   more ›
