Face Fitness

It's time to get your face in shape, too.

fit·ness (fit-nis) - noun 1. health. We work on our cardiovascular system, large muscle groups, balance and flexibility so why not take care of our faces as well? It doesn't have to be for a vain reason, either. It's healthy! I recently checked out Athens Salon & Day Spa, where Nazy Samimi believes in providing lots of massage with her facials. Nazy is from Persia, where she received her initial training. She has been providing services to Athenians for 22 years. Using only organic products to produce the results she wants for her clients, she massages your face most minutes of the hour-long session. Nazy provides several different facials depending upon what your skin needs, but all of them include extensive massage.  As a self-professed …

Costumes Make Exercising Fun

Let Jittery Joe's and Habitat for Humanity Help!

Some people dread exercise of any kind, but we know we have to do it to stay healthy. So, why not add an element of fun? Isn't that why Zumba has been all the rage lately? Dancing is generally fun if you don't worry about winning a contest. What will make a bike ride more fun? Costumes, of course. Having shared a bedroom growing up with a grandmother who dressed up for any and all occasions, I come by my love of dress up naturally. Get your riding crew to dress up with you. It doesn't have to be a sponsored contest or Halloween. It makes the ride more fun for everyone as you pedal along. Use the 4th Annual Jittery Joes Fall Classic on October 15th to create the fun. Yes, the ride can be difficult for newbies but you can sign up and go as …

Strengthen Your Core

Part III - Ten Minutes, Find Them!

The third element in finding three, 10-minute segments to kick start your at-home activity level is core strength. You started with walking or rebounding for your cardiovascular health, added yoga sun salutations for building strength and flexibility and, now, you're going to try using Pilates to target core muscles. Pilates was originally designed to lengthen and align the body. First used by Joseph Pilates as rehabilitation exercises, his method of “Contrology” came to the United States and morphed into exercises for ballet dancers. We now see many styles of Pilates. Most people think the “core” muscles involve only their abdominals. Not true, they actually account for 14 groups of muscles. Thankfully, you don't have to memorize them to …

Vertical Pole Dancing

It's Not What You Think!

Athens Vertical Pole Dance Academy is approaching its one-year anniversary in September. Instructors Ann Lily-Woodruff and Eleanor Kuntz explained the fitness benefits of their favorite exercise. Between their own workout and teaching, they spend 10 to 12 hours each week at the Academy. They come from varied backgrounds, Ann from many years as an aerial performer and Eleanor, a classically trained Russian ballerina. You do not need a certain level of fitness to begin. Any one can get a good workout because the teachers incorporate plenty of floor work in the beginner level classes. Ann and Eleanor want everyone to experience success so they try hard to provide just what their clientele needs to have fun while they exercise – from various …

The Benefits of Rebounding: to infinity, and beyond!

Part II of 10 Minutes - Find Them!

I recommended using a rebounder in my Ten Minutes, Find Them! article. I’ve always been about research so here are some study results to spur you on. It's not rocket science, but... A NASA report in The American Physiological Society included a study demonstrating that for similar levels of heart rate and oxygen consumption, you're getting a better workout by jumping on a trampoline than by running. This is due to acceleration/deceleration forces of the trampoline-like jumping motion. The study gets into G-force and beyond, but suffice it to say, it's good news for those wishing they could run but their body is pleading with them not to because of some previous injury. Some love the outdoor bootcamp experience, but many of us can’t take …

Ten Minutes - Find Them!

Busy people can find three, ten-minute blocks of time to stay healthy

One of the biggest excuses we use to avoid exercise is “I am so busy I just don’t have enough time to exercise." Do you feel like you meet yourself coming and going? Are you up early packing lunches and still up after 10 PM catching up on all the things you still have to do after your family has gone to bed? First of all, remember you’ve got to DO IT! If you don’t try to stay healthy for yourself, then you need to do it for the sake of family and friends. They want you around for as long as you were meant to be. There are certainly hundreds of ways to get exercise. That's the basis for this bi-monthly column. But for those that can’t afford the time or money to take even one of the myriad of classes available, I have a plan for you. …

Rollergirls Make Exercise Exciting

Try in-line skating for your next new calorie burn.

You got to love it. The Classic City Roller Girls get their exercise in the most fun-filled way. They get to dress up in outrageous clothes, paint their faces and get any frustrations out - all in the same workout. Recently I attended the Bout against Breast Cancer. Our girls were skating against the Savannah Derby Devils. Not only did they provide entertainment to us, their featured charity was the Cancer Foundation of Northeast Georgia. During halftime, plaster breast casts from 13 skaters and community members were auctioned off. Each was a work of art that had been customized by local artists. Roller Girls work hard! They practice a total of seven hours a week as a group. Once a month they add in another two-hour group session working …
