Athens Clarke County District 4 Commissioner Allison Wright has asked for a 30-day delay in the demolition of a house at 232 University Drive, on the corner of University and Pinecrest. She did so, she said in an email, in the hope that someone will come forward and move the unique house from its location. It has suffered in the past few years from a lack of attention and upkeep, but remains a very interesting and attractive building--a favorite of many in Five Points. Wright says that the people who bought the lot plan to keep the three-car garage and the interior courtyard, but not the swimming pool nor the house itself. A demolition permit has been filed for a house at the corner of Pinecrest and University Drive. Built in the 1950s by Alwin Stiles, it's a self-possessed, one-story home on a street with a mix of styles and sizes, including larger, older, two-story buildings. The fire department at the intersection of Milledge and Lumpkin streets was abuzz on Election Day morning. And much of the talk concerned the how voting traditions are passed down from one generation to the next. Veteran voters at Precinct 7C, in the heart of Five Points, were eager to be helpful to new constituents and first timers. “I think it is very important for people voting for the first time and turning 18 to be part of the process,” said Andy Rhicard, 32, a public school teacher who has voted in three presidential elections. Dorothy and Jim Newland came home from a brief out of town trip on Saturday night. They glanced at their Obama 2012 sign in the front yard, and everything was fine. When they left for church Sunday morning, they noticed that the plastic sign was gone from its metal frame. Dorothy Newland figured someone had stolen it. But when Dorothy and Jim returned home from church, they found the burned and slightly melted Obama campaign sign lying on top of their scorched lawn. Restrictions on Lumpkin Street apply to day and night-time parking.
A decision by a Five Points property owner to restrict parking in front of his Lumpkin Street building is pressuring other businesses to get tough on parking as well. Bary Stiles has erected signs all along the parking places in front of his mixed use brick building. It houses three businesses, The Local Jam, Panache and Suska, on the ground floor and apartments above. Barry Stiles has said that other businesses, such as the Five Points Laundromat, have closed because of a parking problems. He also claims that his father made an agreement with the City of Athens in 1954 that gave the elder Stiles control of the parking spaces.
