The Independent Baking Company will be making artisanal breads.
The oven is coming, the baker is hired and things are moving along for Thomas Leonard's Independent Baking Company. The bread company will be open in a few weeks. Skylights and a new ceiling give the building a lift.

A little bit of sand and you'd think you weren't in Athens, Ga., anymore.
Chris Lloyd's newly opened Marker 7 Coastal Grill restaurant in Five Points is attracting a steady flow of people who come hungry and leave happy. It's not just the food that's attracting customers--it's the cozy beach-ish atmosphere. I half-expected to see someone flap in wearing a wet suit and scuba tanks. If you choose a table on the outside deck, you can enjoy the sunshine and watch people walking by along Lumpkin Street as you wait--blessedly briefly--for your order. When I was there, the breeze stirring the paper towel rolls on the deck's tables made me think of similar restaurants you find scattered along the coastline of Florida. Ah, summer. I can believe the deck is going to get crowded in a few months. The cole slaw alone makes a…

Does anyone out there want the house?
Athens Clarke County District 4 Commissioner Allison Wright has asked for a 30-day delay in the demolition of a house at 232 University Drive, on the corner of University and Pinecrest. She did so, she said in an email, in the hope that someone will come forward and move the unique house from its location. It has suffered in the past few years from a lack of attention and upkeep, but remains a very interesting and attractive building--a favorite of many in Five Points. Wright says that the people who bought the lot plan to keep the three-car garage and the interior courtyard, but not the swimming pool nor the house itself. They will replace it with a one-and-half-story cottage style house with dormers. Sketches of the house show a variety…

A demolition permit has been filed for the house at Pinecrest and University.
A demolition permit has been filed for a house at the corner of Pinecrest and University Drive. Built in the 1950s by Alwin Stiles, it's a self-possessed, one-story home on a street with a mix of styles and sizes, including larger, older, two-story buildings. Its thin bricks and tidy landscaping set it apart. But the clock is ticking on this building: the deadline for demolition to begin is March 15. There was a slight outcry on the FOFP listserv on Tuesday as members learned of the proposed demolition of the house, a three car garage in the back and a swimming pool. "Better than a mcMonster or Craftsman copy -- a least it is an honest midcentury modern -- which will someday be greatly appreciated," wrote Conoly Hester. "And one of the …

Voters of all ages turned out early for Tuesday's Presidential Election.
The fire department at the intersection of Milledge and Lumpkin streets was abuzz on Election Day morning. And much of the talk concerned the how voting traditions are passed down from one generation to the next. Veteran voters at Precinct 7C, in the heart of Five Points, were eager to be helpful to new constituents and first timers. “I think it is very important for people voting for the first time and turning 18 to be part of the process,” said Andy Rhicard, 32, a public school teacher who has voted in three presidential elections. Before they even start high school, youngsters need to learn where different candidates stand on specific issues. Robert Brawner, 58, lives on Milledge Circle and has three children in their 20s. He has …

Who could have done such a thing? she wonders.
Dorothy and Jim Newland came home from a brief out of town trip on Saturday night. They glanced at their Obama 2012 sign in the front yard, and everything was fine. When they left for church Sunday morning, they noticed that the plastic sign was gone from its metal frame. Dorothy Newland figured someone had stolen it. But when Dorothy and Jim returned home from church, they found the burned and slightly melted Obama campaign sign lying on top of their scorched lawn. Dorothy Newland is pretty hot about the incident. "Who would do such a thing?" she asked. "I'm going to drive the neighborhood and look for other Obama signs." She found two intact Obama signs on Catawba Avenue. She called the Clarke County Democratic Headquarters, where …

Restrictions on Lumpkin Street apply to day and night-time parking.
A decision by a Five Points property owner to restrict parking in front of his Lumpkin Street building is pressuring other businesses to get tough on parking as well. Bary Stiles has erected signs all along the parking places in front of his mixed use brick building. It houses three businesses, The Local Jam, Panache and Suska, on the ground floor and apartments above. Barry Stiles has said that other businesses, such as the Five Points Laundromat, have closed because of a parking problems. He also claims that his father made an agreement with the City of Athens in 1954 that gave the elder Stiles control of the parking spaces. Attorney Regina Quick, who represents Barry Stiles, said until the litigation is concluded, her client would …
