The Georgia Department of Labor (GDOL) will sponsor a job expo for veterans and other job seekers Thursday, May 9, in Athens. The expo will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at VFW Post 2872, located at 835 Sunset Drive. The expo will focus primarily on helping active-duty military personnel, retirees, National Guard and reserve units, and their family members; however, it will also be open to the general public. The expo will feature a number of employers, educational institutions, and resource agencies that provide assistance to job seekers. Some employers will be hiring, while others will discuss possible future employment opportunities with the job seekers. GDOL staff will be available to provide employment-related assistance to job …

Metro Athens still retains the lowest unemployment rate in the state.

A press release from the Georgia Department of Labor says: The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that the preliminary unemployment rate in the metro Athens area rose to 6.6 percent in December, up four-tenths of a percentage point from 6.2 percent in November. The rate was 7.0 percent in December 2011. The rate rose because of a loss of jobs and more people were unemployed. The number of people unemployed rose by 367 to 7,342, up from 6,975 in November. The number of jobs declined by 1,800 to 85,800 in December, from 87,600 in November. The monthly loss was mostly in the service-related industries, along with state and local government. The Georgia Department of Labor announced today that Georgia’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 8.5 percent in November, down two-tenths of a percentage point from 8.7 percent in October. The rate was 9.5 percent in November a year ago. The Athens area has added 2,400 jobs since November 2011, the report says. “This is the lowest state unemployment rate in nearly four years, since it was 8.5 percent in January 2009,” said State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler, in a press release. “Once again, the rate dropped because of continued job growth and fewer new layoffs.” The number of jobs increased to 3,984,000, up by 9,600, or two-tenths of a percentage point, from 3,974,400 in October.
