The Georgia Department of Labor will host a live chat with expert advice from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, and you can join the discussion on Patch. Participants will learn about the advantages of seasonal and temporary work, how to find them, and the truth behind myths related to this kind of work. The Georgia Department of Labor and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will co-sponsor a career expo for veterans and other job seekers on Thursday. The expo will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at VFW Post No. 2872 at 835 Sunset Drive, and more than 50 employers, educational institutions and resource agencies are set to participate. “As more of our veterans end their terms of service, I want to ensure that we welcome them back home properly and that we acknowledge what they did for our country,” State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said in a news release announcing the expo. “Although we are seeing signs of growth in the economy, it will still be awhile before we recover completely. The Georgia Department of Labor is closing some of its offices to save money, and employees from Elberton and perhaps Monroe will be moving to the Athens Career Center, the department announced Thursday. According to news releases, nine employees working in Elberton will shift to Athens, and employees in Monroe will move either to Athens or Covington effective July 1. The labor department's increased online presence and its ability to offer services such as unemployment insurance claims electroniclly will lessen the impact of the office closures, the announcements said. The Athens area's unemployment rate nudged up .1 percentage points in January, to 7.1 percent, according to prelimnary data the Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday. That's worse than the revised 7.0 percent in December, but better than January 2011's 7.9 percent rate and better than the rest of Georgia, the agency reported. Dalton's unemployment rate, 12.7 percent, was the state's highest. Clarke County's unemployment rate for January was 7.3 percent; Oconee's was 5.9 percent. The Athens metro area comprises Clarke, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe counties.
