Georgia Ranks Dead Last in State Integrity Investigation

State received an "F" grade in 9 of 14 categories.

Georgia government has the highest corruption risk of any state in the union, according to the State Integrity Investigation, a project ranking state government transparency and ethics. The State Integrity Investigation ranked states in 14 categories, including campaign finance, ethics laws and lobbying regulations, and assigned letter grades in each category. Georgia received an "F" in 9 of the 14 categories, as well as a "D" or "D-" grade in state budget processes, procurement and executive accountability, and a "C-" in judicial accountability. The highest grade Georgia received was a "B" in internal auditing. According to the SII report, Georgia law books are filled with statutes "written to curtail undue influence on political …

What about Drug Testing?

The Georgia General Assembly wants to test welfare recipients; voters want to test legislators.

A controversial bill that could become law in Georgia mandates that before anyone can receive welfare benefits, he or she must be tested for illegal drugs. It's similar to one that's in effect in Florida--which costs the state hundreds of thousands of dollars and saves virtually peanuts. The Republicans in the General Assembly nevertheless believe this measure would stop welfare fraud, but critics are not convinced, saying that testing doesn't prevent drug use. Undeterred, Republican Senator John Albers of North Fulton County says that making welfare recipients pass a drug test will prevent parents from using illegal drugs: Albers says, "If a family was having a problem where one parent was utilizing illegal drugs it will no way harm the …

Gingrich Camp Looks to Super Tuesday

As Gingrich's Buckhead headquarters beefs up the Georgia campaign, Romney supporter Edward Lindsey calls for Republicans to line up behind former Mass. governor.

The staff at Newt Gingrich’s Buckhead headquarters is gearing up for a big Southern push after the Florida primary Tuesday. Volunteers will be in the Gingrich office Tuesday making get-out-the-vote calls to Floridians in hopes of swaying undecided voters in Gingrich’s campaign against Mitt Romney, whom polls show having a formidable lead in Florida. A handful of volunteers were making calls Monday afternoon, with the bulk of the staff in Florida doing last-minute campaigning. Volunteers were also fielding calls from around the nation and from as far away as Australia. Even if Gingrich falters in Florida, his local strategists are looking for a strong performance on Super Tuesday on March 6 in Georgia and Tennessee, although Gingrich will…

How about a number or two. After the Florida primary: Need to Nominate 1,144. (available) 2,177. N Gingrich 27. W Romney 67. R Paul 9. R Santorum 6. Total 2,286. 109 total delegates allocated. Not even 5% of the total. None of them are anywhere close to the 1,144 needed to win the nomination. Anyone talking about a clear republican nominee at this point is merely trying to get people to accept …   more ›

Concern about Latino Students Leads to Film Project

Friends in the UGA College of Education team up on video.

Two doctoral candidates in the UGA College of Education found they shared a common interest—the welfare of Latinos. Together, Tobie Bass and Lindy Johnson, who are in the program for language and literacy education, have created a three-minute video to raise awareness of the plight of undocumented students in Georgia. By using images, they hope to show why people should rethink their opinions. Included in the video are footage and photos they shot at a rally in Atlanta last week. “It’s not so strongly opinionated,” said Bass. “We leave it open for people to interpret in their own way.” The Board of Regents prohibits undocumented students from attending UGA, Ga. Tech, Georgia State, the Georgia Health Sciences University or Georgia College…

Oh Bill, If democracy doesn't = tyranny, it = mob rule. Do you keep the gods of hyperbole in your basement? These are American you are vilifying. Or is it just some specific sample of Americans you call a mob? If you have surveyed every philosopher from Plato to Montesquieu, you haven't had time to breathe. What about Montaigne, Hume, Emerson? I know Emerson is too close to contemporary for your …   more ›
