Thank goodness, it's Friday....I think. But let's talk about the weekend.
At 9:30am on Saturday, you can join the Weed Warriors in Memorial Park for a morning of clearing and cleaning invasive plants from the Birchmore Trail. Wear long pants, bring water and check the group's facebook page if it looks like rain. At noon, there's the free screening of American Teacher in the Tate Student Center Theatre. The movie lasts more than a hour, with some discussion to follow. Wonder how many people will either join or flee the teacher ranks after watching this documentary? At noon also, doors open at the Melting Point for a performance and dance party for children, ages 3 to 10, and their parents, by the popular children's musical group Laughing Pizza. It's geared toward a pint-sized audience, but at $12 to $15, the …

In like a lamb and out like a....llama?
Just to reiterate: Come to Good Dirt on Saturday at noon for the "Handmade for the Hungry" event, a blending of ceramics, soup, artists, clay and the Food Bank of Northeast Georgia. Can't beat that! The event runs until 3:30pm. On Saturday, there's going to be a rally downtown by People for a Better Athens, the sometimes vocal group digging in against a proposed Wal Mart on the edge of downtown Athens. Some media types in town have slammed the group, but I admire their love for their town and their willingness to share their views. The rally runs from 3 to 6pm and is scheduled for City Hall. if it rains, things will move to the New Earth Music Hall at Hull and Doughterty. Attention, New Moms. There's a support group for you that meets …

Things to see and do (and buy) this weekend at Good Dirt
The holiday season was the inspiration for an open house at Good Dirt, December 9th-11th. The event includes workshops and demonstrations of wheel throwing and glass fusing. Also, the gallery is amply stocked with new work by dozens of artists. We stopped by on Saturday and came away with these photos. The open house continued through Sunday, from noon to 5:00 p.m.

Tap into your inner artist and then reward your creativity with a nice dinner.
Those familiar with Athens know that each weekend offers a variety of activities. Our Great Escapes feature will highlight an activity that seems so much fun, you will want to hire a babysitter and cross off the days. Sometimes date night just can't be as spontaneous as it used to be. How often do you try something new and step out of your comfort zone? Typical date nights may include dinner and a movie. What about tapping into your inner artist? Good Dirt's "Try Clay" class on Friday nights are designed for those with no previous pottery experience. Taught by Allya MacDonald, the two-hour workshop is designed so everyone ends with a finished product they can paint and decorate. Rob Sutherland, Good Dirt's owner, says you should "come …
