ACC Police Search for Robbery Suspect

A woman tried to snatch another woman's purse at the Alps Road Kroger.

At 4:00pm, April 26, a woman from Lake Wellbrook Drive was inside Kroger at 191 Alps Road. While shopping, she was approached by a white female who attempted to take her purse. The Oconee County woman was able to wrestle the purse away from the suspect. She then notified store employees. The suspect is described as a white female, brown hair (pulled back in a pony-tail), wearing sunglasses on her head, a black hooded shirt with a white shirt underneath, jeans and black flip-flops. The suspect was also described by one witness as having a large “mole” on her chin. She was last seen walking towards St. Mary’s Hospital from Kroger.

Huge Kroger, Visible from Outer Space, Will be Built at U.S. 29 and Ga. 72

It's not that big, but at 123,000 square feet, it dwarfs the Alps Kroger.

If they could have, the Athens Clarke County Commission would have blown kisses at the officials from Kroger who arrived toward the end of the Tuesday night Commission meeting. As it was, they simply thanked them for choosing to build a grocery store on 22 acres near Athens Tech and then approved the proposal. When the Kroger is finished in the summer of 2014, it will be the first from-the-ground-up, state-of-the-art Kroger grocery in Georgia. So says Arahn Hawkins, real estate manager for Kroger. What does state-of-the-art mean for Kroger? Hawkins says it means more of everything: more baby products. More fish. More kinds of coffee. A bigger offering of organic food, organic produce, organic packaged food, organic baby food, milk, …

This Troy Can Really Sack 'Em

Athens, Ga., grocery bagger prepares for competition in the Kroger's Bag Off.

His years on the football field and the basketball court at Clarke Central have served Troy Yerby III well. The recent graduate will compete on Wednesday in the Statewide Division Championship in Dacula, and he’ll be using his hand-and-eye coordination like crazy, to bag grocers fast and well. He’s hoping to advance to the next stage and represent Kroger at the Georgia Food Industry Association’s competition in July. The winner of that will go up against the country’s top baggers at the 2013 National Grocers Association Best Baggers Contest in Las Vegas.  Troy has worked as a bagger at the Alps Road Kroger for the past 18 months. He’s fast, efficient, and “a real bouncer,” says Vickie Stout, the store’s front end manager. “I’d been …

No Trial for Mentally Ill Man Accused of Stabbing Athens Police Officer

A judge has ruled that Steven Anthony Eberhart, who nearly killed Sgt. Courtney Gale in 2007, is not competent to be tried.

It took four years of therapy for Athens-Clarke officer Courtney Gale to be able to return to the police force after being stabbed in the leg while working security at a Kroger. It's taken more than four juries and a judge to determine whether the man accused of stabbing her, Steven Anthony Eberhart, is fit to face criminal charges. Western Judicial Circuit Chief Judge Lawton Stephens ruled last week that Eberhart, who has been diagnosed with more than one mental illness, is not competent to stand trial, the Athens Banner-Herald reported. Eberhart is now considered in the custody of the state Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, where he is under care in Augusta, the paper reported.
