An Athens Man Just Won $2.5 Million

Donald McColman pulled a top prize in a Georgia Lottery scratch-off game.

Donald McColman went into the Jimbo's on Macon Highway recently, grabbed a $100 Million Lucky Fortunes lottery card, and scratched his way to two and a half million dollars. “I grinned when I shared it with the proprietor,” McColman said in a news release from the Georgia Lottery. “She jumped up and down and gave me a hug. She was excited.” McColman, 66, was presented a big check at the store this week. He and his wife, Julie, plan to use the money for savings and a retirement home, the release said. All Georgia Lottery profits go to pay for specific educational programs, including Georgia’s HOPE Scholarship Program and Georgia’s Pre-K Program.

Mega Millions Jackpot Attracts Mega Suckers

"There's a sucker is born every minute" -- P.T. Barnum

With mega-millions of dollars at stake in the Mega Millions drawing, no doubt thousands of Georgians will buy lottery tickets. Do they really think they’ll win? Apparently so, because 22 percent of adults in America believe “investing” in a lottery offers a one-way ticket to “real” wealth. So there will be a lot of investing today. You have a much better chance of being hit by lightning or chomped by a Grizzly Bear than winning this particular lottery. Just when you thought Georgia couldn’t land on another dubious list—such as ones for infant mortality, sexually transmitted diseases and obesity—here we are. Our residents are among some of “the biggest suckers in America,” according to a recent Bloomberg report. We spend the most on …

"At least they're helping the Pre-K program and the HOPE Scholarship program. Maybe we can call it Suckers for Scholars." I do know that, as the story reflects. If you care to make a donation that way, I'm sure students appreciate it. The programs suffer as the economy dips because many people don't have money for lottery tickets. Not even a dollar. Maybe you can buy two?   more ›
