Bibles Returning to State Parks, Says Governor Deal

What do you think about Bibles in cabins and lodge rooms on state properties? Tells us in the comments section.

Governor Nathan Deal says the state will return Bibles to guest cabins and lodge rooms at Georgia parks following their recent removal by Georgia Department of Natural Resources managers, MyFoxAtlanta.com reports.  The Bibles were removed while a final decision was made on the response to a citizen complaint about Bibles on state property.  According to a press release from Gov. Deal's office, “Out of an abundance of caution to avoid potential litigation, the commissioner removed the Bibles from rooms – though they were still available on site – after a complaint from a visitor. The attorney general and I agree that the state is on firm legal footing as we move to return the Bibles to the rooms. These Bibles are donated by outside groups…

No More Tolls on Ga. 400 By The End of 2013, Governor Says

The State Road and Tollway Authority will have to approve it first, though.

In a press release on Thursday, Gov. Nathan Deal announced that he would have the state pay off its bond debt by Dec. 1, 2013. He said the state would then move quickly to remove the Ga. 400 toll before the beginning of 2014 and stopped toll collections four years earlier than previously planned. However, the State Road and Tollway Authority will have to approve it first. Deal said this move was in response to his promise to commuters. “Ga. 400 commuters have paid more than their fair share already, and this is the earliest we can bring it down without paying a penalty for early repayment of the bonds,” Deal said in a press release. “When the Ga. 400 toll went up, the state of Georgia promised commuters that it wasn’t forever. If we don’…

Gov. Deal strongly endorses transportation local option sales tax

"As an individual, I do advocate for it. As a governor, I am advocating for it because this is not a legislatively imposed tax. It is a tax increase that the people themselves will decide about." - Nathan Deal

With traffic creeping along the I-75/I-85 Connector below him, Gov. Nathan Deal and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle stood high atop an 18-story Midtown office tower early Wednesday evening. They urged Metro Atlantans to vote in favor of next month’s regional transportation penny sales tax referendum. The pair addressed a small group of reporters atop the Atlantic Station building before a private fundraiser for local business leaders who are in favor of the tax’s passage. A new Insider Advantage poll of 539 people shows that 47 percent of those asked would vote against the 10-year, one cent sales tax, with 32 percent for it and 21 percent undecided. But those numbers didn’t phase Deal, who brushed aside the notion that he was backtracking on his no…

Oh Bill, If democracy doesn't = tyranny, it = mob rule. Do you keep the gods of hyperbole in your basement? These are American you are vilifying. Or is it just some specific sample of Americans you call a mob? If you have surveyed every philosopher from Plato to Montesquieu, you haven't had time to breathe. What about Montaigne, Hume, Emerson? I know Emerson is too close to contemporary for your …   more ›

State Climatologist Replaced

Gov. Deal tosses out longtime expert David Stooksbury and assistant Pam Knox

A tornado seems to have hit the State Climatologist's Office. For more than a decade, UGA professor David Stooksbury has also served as Georgia's state climatologist. He and assistant Pam Knox have been the go-to guys for all things weather--drought, rainfall, El Nino, La Nina, tornadoes, climate change. They kept massive amounts of data on their website, with links to NOAA sources and other valuable sites for everyone interested in weather, from folks planning to plant to folks planning a picnic. Late last week, Gov. Nathan Deal replaced the Dynamic Weather Duo with men from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. On Sunday, Stooksbury said with a smile that he had learned more about what transpired from an article in the AJC than …

Laurie, I couldn't agree with you more about how gracious and professional David and Pam are now and have always been in their positions as head and assistant state climatologists. As a reporter with a print publication, I attended their press conferences for many years, and found them enlightening and entertaining. Both were always happy to comment on drought, severe weather, climate change or …   more ›
