Buena Vista Resident Concerned over Large Scale Developments in In-Town Neighborhoods

Melissa Link warned the ACC Commission of problems to come if they don't address large scale developments.

  At Tuesday's meeting of the Athens Clarke County Commission, Buena Vista Heights resident Melissa Link spoke to the commissioners about her neighborhood. Last month, the commission designated as a historic district part of the neighborhood, which lies off Prince Avenue near the new UGA Health Sciences Campus. The commissioners approved a district that was half the size of one recommended by the Historic Preservation Commission. Link noted that a small house on Park Avenue was on the market for one day before an investor bought it, presumably to construct a larger building on the lot.

Behind the Curtain at Daily Groceries in Athens

Ever wondered where those yummy deli foods come from?

In the refrigerator at Daily Groceries, you can find all sorts of delicious foods, made by the preparers in the small work area in the back of the store. Workers assemble salads, spreads and sandwiches, package them and sell them in the store. You can find faux turkey, eggless egg salad and the original sammy sandwich. And salads, some large enough for a church picnic. In this video, we see a few culinary steps involved in a salad creation.

Athens Mayor Nancy Denson Presents 'Heart of the City' to Patel Family

The Athens Academy teen who inspired a world-record-breaking bone marathon registry drive last year in Athens passed away last week.

During a celebration of the life of Athens Academy student Kajal Patel on Sunday, Athens-Clarke Mayor Nancy Denson presented the Patel family with a special gift in honor of the young hero. Kajal battled an immune disorder nearly all of her life.  In the fall of 2011, she suffered a stroke, and doctors told the family her best chance of recovery would involve a bone marrow transplant. The odds seemed daunting -- a one in over 20,000 chance of finding a match -- but Kajal's classmates and teachers rallied around her and organized an incredible event to "Be a Hero for Kajal." The world-record-breaking Marrow-Thon was held last spring and more than 4,000 individuals, including many University of Georgia students, registered as possible bone …
