Do You Expect the World to End on Dec. 21, 2012?

With end of the Maya's "long count" calendar set for Dec. 21, there have been predictions about the world coming to an end. Will you be having an End of the World Party on Dec. 21 or do you still expect to be around the next day.

There are reportedly many parties planned for Dec. 20 or 21 this year, just in case. With the "long count" calendar of the Ancient Mayans coming to an end that day, some people are a little pessimistic about any calendar continuing past that date. Experts on the matter, however, say we've got nothing to worry about. According to an article on nbcnews.com, "Experts estimate the system starts counting at 3114 B.C., and will have run through 13 baktuns, or 5,125 years, around Dec. 21. Experts say 13 was a significant number for the Maya, and the end of that cycle would be a milestone — but not an end." Some people believe the Maya may have predicted "impending astronomical disasters that would coincide with 2012, ranging from explosive storms…

Misinterpretation of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar is the basis for a popular belief that a cataclysm will take place on December 21, 2012. December 21, 2012 is simply the day that the calendar will go to the next b'ak'tun, at Long Count 13.0.0.0.0. The date on which the calendar will go to the next piktun (a complete series of 20 b'ak'tuns), at Long Count 1.0.0.0.0.0, will be on October …   more ›

How do you Call the Election in Athens, Ga.?

Will Obama win? Will Amendment 1 pass? What do you think?

Former Athens Mayor Gwen O'Looney, Athens Clarke County Mayor Pro Tem Andy Herod, and ACC Commissioner Alice Kinman believe President Obama will be returned to office for a second term. Political science professor Keith Poole thinks Obama's re-election hinges on how the vote turns out, relative to the numbers from 2008. "I think Amendment 1 will fail in Athens, and I'm praying for failure on the statewide level," said O'Looney. "I think the Presidential race will be close, but that Obama will win. And I think Spencer will win." O'Looney also thinks that write-in Congressional candidate Charles Darwin will receive more than 10 percent of the vote in Athens, "which sends a pretty strong message," I think. Geographer Herod predicts that …

Hurricane Isaac Doesn't Live Up To Expectations

The storm pounds the Gulf Coast but bring little rain or relief to Georgia.

Talk about a disappointment, moisture wise, for Georgia. Hurricane Isaac didn't behave the way weather forecasters at UGA expected him to. Instead of parking over Georgia and raining like crazy, Isaac sashayed westward, where the ground is saturated, giving Athens only a tad of what was needed. Forecasters thought this latest hurricane could significantly reduce Georgia's drought, but that's not likely to happen. According to a UGA press release, the state has seen little relief.  “We thought it would park over Georgia, and we would get a few days of rain, which could have wiped out the drought,” said Pam Knox, an agricultural climatologist with University of Georgia Cooperative Extension. “Instead, it moved further to the west than we …
