A victory Saturday should send the Bulldogs to the SEC championship game.
Auburn's not very good this year. They're still looking for an SEC win, and Georgia might not be the best place to find it. The Bulldogs, while romping through some rough patches, are ranked fifth in the country and need only beat the Tigers to wrap up the SEC East Division and play for the league championship. Of course, Bulldogs coach Mark Richt isn't preparing his team for a cakewalk. "I told the guys `Get your mind right, right now,"' Richt said in an Associated Press story earlier this week. "We know they're capable of knocking us off." The Dawgs will be bringing a depleted receiving corps to Auburn. Marlon Brown was reported out for the season earlier this week after tearing an ACL against Mississippi. And the Bulldogs lost Michael …

The No. 1 Tide rallies, and Georgia wins. Share your thoughts.
It will go down as a memorable comeback. Saturday night in Baton Rouge, La., -- one of the toughest places for a visiting team in college football -- top-ranked Alabama pulled off a stirring 21-17 victory. Starting from their own 28 with less than two minutes remaining, the Tide drove the distance for the winning TD, a 28-yard screen pass from A.J. McCarron to T.J. Yeldon being the winning blow. "We told the players they would have to overcome a lot of adversity to win a game here," Bama coach Nick Saban told al.com. "When things went bad and the momentum of the game changed, that's what we kept talking to them about. They kept their poise and we kept playing, we kept competing. -- Courtesy CBSSports.com, here are video highlights of …

The triumphant Bulldogs return to Athens, back in the driver's seat in the SEC Eastern Division.
The Bulldogs did what they needed against Florida last week in what henceforth shall be known as the Hot Potato Bowl, but it wasn't pretty. The game produced more ugly turnovers than a remedial pastry class. Credit Georgia's resurgent defense for Florida's sloppiness. After a public chewing out by safety Shawn Williams leading up to the game, the Bulldogs were relentless. Junior linebacker Jarvis Jones' performance alone was enough to help earn him semifinalist status for two national awards, the Maxwell and the Bednarik. The next step for Georgia's emotional squad, heading into Saturday's Homecoming game against Mississippi, is to provoke fewer yellow hankies from the officials, Mark Weiszer reports for the Morris News Service. The Dawgs …

Here's a look at the weekend's SEC action.
Georgia-Florida might be the most important SEC football game this weekend, but it's not the only one. A lot of other teams, like Mississippi State, are in the thick of the SEC title race. The Bulldogs from Starkville, Miss., are unbeaten in the SEC at 3-0 as they prepare to travel to Tuscaloosa and Saturday's game with No. 1 Alabama (4-0 in SEC). Game time is 8:30 p.m., ESPN. Mississippi State has enjoyed steady success under head coach Dan Mullen, a former University of Florida coach who took over in 2009. The team went to bowls in 2010 and 2011, and with seven wins overall in 2012, it is bowl-eligible again. Now, Mississippi State can achieve more by beating No. 1 Alabama. Do you think Mississippi State will upset Alabama? Who do you …
The Bulldogs could coast to an SEC East title - if they can get past the undefeated Gators.
So, in their last two games, Georgia got trounced by South Carolina and barely squeaked by the unimpressive Kentucky Wildcats. And yet, Bulldogs faithful are still talking about a shot at the SEC championship. Why? Because the Bulldogs have only one loss, and if they beat Florida on Saturday, a relatively gentle schedule gives them an opportunity to cruise to the SEC East title. The schedule is so favorable, an AP reporter suggested that Georgia "might be the most fortunate team in the nation." It might be better to be lucky than good, but are the Bulldogs good enough to beat a Florida team that wiped the floor with South Carolina, the team that wiped the floor with Georgia? Well, we know that college football isn't a linear proposition, …

Checking this weekend's football action in the all-powerful SEC.
Talk about Murderer's Row. The South Carolina Gamecocks (6-1, 4-1) will continue to test some top SEC competition Saturday when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to test the Florida Gators. (Game time: 3:30 p.m., CBS). Just two weeks ago, the Gamecocks trounced then-No. 5 Georgia, 35-7. Last Saturday, Steve Spurrier's crew came close but fell 23-21 to now-No. 6 LSU. Now come the No. 3 (in AP) Gators, who bested LSU two weeks ago. -- Do you think South Carolina will defeat Florida? Tell us how the SEC will shake out this week in the comments below. UGA still has to face Florida (6-0, 5-0), so a Gators victory Saturday would help any chances the Bulldogs might have of an SEC East title. That would give the Gamecocks two SEC losses, and …

The Bulldogs are hoping for a strong performance, and some help from Florida, to get back into the SEC East title hunt.
We knew Bulldogs fans would be rooting for Florida this week, so the Gators can beat South Carolina and restore Georgia's opportunity to win the SEC East division. Aaron Murray's even telling people to. Murray told the AP that Georgia faithful have "a free pass" to be one-time Florida fans and added, "I definitely am." UGA head coach Mark Richt also got into the act, telling the press: "I'm definitely a Gator fan this week." Of course, what Richt, Murray and Bulldogs fans really need to concentrate on is getting the job done at Kentucky on Saturday. David Ching of ESPN's DawgNation blog notes that the Wildcats have played Georgia closer than their record might indicate, including a 19-10 game in 2011 in which the Bulldogs had to come from …

Is the season over for the Georgia Bulldogs? Or will a little adversity push them to great heights?
The Georgia Bulldogs have two weeks to lick their wounds after Saturday's loss to South Carolina, a game that was billed as a barn burner and turned out to be a tar-and-feathering. The Dawgs have a bye week this Saturday to reflect on what could have been and look ahead to visiting a hapless Kentucky on Oct. 20. The now No. 14 Bulldogs seem to be taking their humiliation in stride. "We've still got life. It's a long season. We've got more games to play," Malcolm Mitchell, a sophomore receiver, is quoted saying by the Macon Telegraph's Seth Emerson. "If we dwell on this game, we'll lose the next one, then lose the next one. We've gotta stay focused and keep pushing." Emerson reports that head coach Mark Richt is holding steady amid the …

Patch editors Chris Winston in South Carolina and Steve Burns in Georgia talk a little smack about which team will win Saturday's big SEC football game.
There may not be anything more important this weekend in Georgia and South Carolina than what’s fixin’ to take place Saturday in Columbia. When the Gamecocks and Bulldogs square off in Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday at 7 p.m. (ESPN) in the biggest SEC football matchup of the season. It may be the biggest game in series history. Both are 5-0 overall, 3-0 in the SEC. Both have national championship aspirations. And both have rabid fan bases that are not afraid to talk a little trash. Patch, which has 59 websites serving local communities in the two states, decided it wants to weigh in on the big game. Patch staffers Chris Winston of South Carolina and Steve Burns of Georgia offer up their own trash talk on the rivalry and the big game, and …
