Where do you go when you want just dessert?
Where do you go when you just want dessert? The obvious answer, if you are in Downtown Athens, would be any one of the cupcake or frozen yogurt shops that have opened up in recent years. However, Athens Patch has a few, slightly more romantic suggestions to satisfy your sweet tooth. Trappeze Trappeze Pub is known for its excellent beer selection, but is also known for keeping a cake or two available at the bar. Highwire Lounge, the sister bar of Trappeze, hosts local musicians throughout the week, with Kenosha Kid on Tuesday nights and the Rand Lines Trio on Friday nights. Speakeasy Speakeasy is a tapas bar, serving up delectable dishes a la carte. The crème brûlée is nothing short of perfection, and your server can recommend the perfect …

Professionals tell students about their work.
Half of the fastest-growing occupations today are in the healthcare industry, with a projected growth of 3.2 million jobs before 2018. Although some of those jobs may be better paying than others, the whiff of opportunity attracted nearly 100 UGA students to a health careers event in October. Many came for practical advice about preparing for future jobs, never expecting passionate testimonials from speakers But by the end of the session, they’d heard plenty of both. If your collection fits into any of these categories, pickers Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz might could want to speak at you. And you might make a little money from their visit. Oops! Better re-phrase that. Pickers Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz would like to see what you have and, well, pick through it for …

Tomorrow, from noon to 8 pm, Athens is invited to the grand re-opening, a “Spooktacular,” of High Maintenance Formalwear (HMFW).It's in Five Points, across from Hodgson Terrace in the blue house. New owner Amy Burns, who purchased the store in September, is excited to showcase the newly improved HMFW. Burns sparkles like the dresses lined up on the store racks as she shares her hopes for the future. She is looking forward to using her people skills and HMFW to serve the Athens community. The store is locally owned and operated. It carries top designer fashion (if a desired dress isn’t available, often HMFW can order it for delivery within two days). The store carries designers most people think they can find only in Atlanta. This makes it …

This article is a profile of of BioInquire, a UGA startup company that was acquired by NuSep, Inc in 2010.
When BioInquire was purchased in 2010, Athens became the U.S. headquarters of NuSep Inc., a publicly traded Australian company specializing in laboratory products for the study of proteins. The acquisition added ProteoIQ, the proprietary software package developed by BioInquire, to NuSep’s repertoire of 55 protein analysis products. Proteins, giant molecules that perform a broad spectrum of functions in living cells, are a major focus of biological research. NuSEP General Manager (U.S.) and former BioInquire CEO, James Atwood III, believes that ProteoIQ will prove useful to about 5,000 academic and industrial laboratories worldwide. To date, NuSep has placed software packages in nearly 100 laboratories, and their sales representatives are …
