  There's still time to register for the 2013 Southern Garden Heritage Conference, focusing on heirloom fruits and vegetables and the gardening traditions of the South. "Heirloom Gardening in the South" is designed to appeal to gardeners, landscape architects, preservationists, and plant lovers with all levels of expertise and skill. UGA Police Release Composite Sketch of Attempted Rape Suspect From Bot Garden in Athens, Ga.

A woman walking on a trail last Friday at the State Botanical Garden managed to escape her assailant and to give GBI officials a description of the man.

If anyone recognizes this individual, believes they may know who he is or has any information about this incident, they are urged to contact the UGA Police Department at 706/542-0090 immediately.

Woman Escapes Attempted Rape on Trail at State Botanical Garden in Athens, Ga.

Officers from several different law enforcement agencies searched for a suspect Friday night.

  A woman was walking on a trail in the State Botanical Garden on Friday afternoon around 4:20. Suddenly, a tall, thin man approached her, put a knife to her neck and threatened to rape her. She managed to flee and call authorities. Law enforcement officials searched Friday night along and near South Milledge for a white man, six feet tall, about 150 pounds, with short blonde hair. According to the UGA Police Blog, the suspect was wearing a hooded green and white sweatshirt, blue sweatpants, a hooded green and white sweatshirt, black sunglasses and white running shoes. The State Botanical Garden Was the Setting of an Attempted Rape Friday in Athens, Ga.

Authorities Friday evening were combing the area of the State Botanical Garden on South Milledge Avenue.

  The Athens Clarke County Police, the University of Georgia Police and the Oconee County Sheriff's Department were on Friday evening hunting for a suspect in an attempted rape in the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. A man with a knife threatened to rape a woman as she walked on one of the many trails in the garden. After talking with the perpetrator, the UGA Police Blog says, but she was able to elude him and seek help. The woman called UGA Police to report the incident. She said it occurred about 4:20pm. Shortly before 7 p.m., the Oconee County Sheriff's Office sent out a Nixle alert advising that K-9s were deployed and patrol deputies were assisting with the search. Today's the deadline for artists to apply to install a large art installation in the new atrium of the Classic Center. The dealine for submission is 5pm and the budget for the project is $130,000.   Who doesn't love this wonderful weather we've been having? The evenings are so cool and comfortable, I feel like i'm in the mountains. The Occupy caravan, crossing the country en route to Philadelphia, is supposed to stop in Athens tomorrow at 6pm. Wonder what this may do to the traffic from AthFest? Guess we wait and see, no? From 9:30am to 12:30pm today, there's a class in digital photography of plants at the State Botanical Garden. What a good plant to shoot plants, inside and out. Cost is $50 for non-members and $45 for members. A big part of AthFest is KidsFest. There are things to do, hear and see, as well as inflatables. Summer Camp Spots Still Available

State Botanical Garden in Athens, Ga., has week-long programs for your child.

  There’s still time to register children ages 3 to 12 for summer day camps in June and July at the State Botanical Garden. The Sweet Pea Club is for little children and their caregivers. Garden Earth is for older children. Registration is available here. . Here're descriptions and schedules. Campers may attend one week from Garden Earth I and one week from Garden Earth II.: Garden Earth Nature Camp: ages 5-8 Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.

Series of Outdoor Garden Concerts Begins June 12

The State Botanical Garden sponsors the Sunflower Music Series in Athens, Ga.

  Wash those blankets and clean your picnic baskets. The summer Sunflower Music Series is beginning at the State Botanical Garden on June 12. There are four concerts during the next four months. Each two-hour concert begins at 7 p.m. on the stage of the Flower Garden, a terraced area between the Day Chapel and the Visitor Center and Conservatory. When is who playing? June 12—Whisper Kiss, opening for Randall Bramblett. July 10 – Romper Stompers, with Danielle Howle opening August 28 – Grogus  September 25 – Arvin Scott Quartet What does it cost?   Forks Over Knives. That’s the title of today’s free film, the 3rd in the Animal Voices Film Festival, sponsored by the UGA student group Speak out for Species. The movie examines the idea that a diet based on animal products and processed food is responsible for most of today’s health problems. Showtime is 7:30pm in Room 102 of the Miller Learning Center, at the intersection of Baxter and Lumpkin.
