2012 Traffic Fatalities Far Outnumber Homicides in Athens, Ga.

  In Athens in 2012, it was much more likely that someone was going to die in a traffic fatality than in a homicide, according to police records. There were nine traffic deaths and five homicides last year, said Athens Clarke County Assistant Police Chief Carter Greene. Some of those who died include: A collision in early December at Timothy Road and the Athens Bypass killed a 90-year-old passenger. A man died when he lost control of his motorcycle on Epps Bridge Parkway. In November, a driver from Jefferson hit and killed a pedestrian on Old Hull Road. Two Traffic Deaths Reported in Georgia During New Year's Holiday

The Georgia State Patrol reported its troopers investigated 315 accidents as of noon today.

Georgia State Troopers already have investigated more crashes during this New Year's holiday than last year, but fewer injuries and only two deaths have been reported – so far. During holiday period patrols, 262 people were arrested for driving under the influence. Troopers had investigated 315 accidents as of noon, Dec. 31. During last year's entire 102-hour holiday, the Department of Public Safety investigated 296 accidents. But those accidents included 172 injuries and 7 deaths. Statewide last year, law enforcement agencies reported 1,929 accidents with 716 inuries and 13 deaths. 17 Georgia Fatalties Reported in Christmas Holiday Traffic

The Georgia State Patrol investigated 685 crashes with 300 injuries, including one in Athens.

Seventeen traffic deaths, including one in Athens, were reported in the 102-hour Christmas holiday travel period,which began Friday at 6 p.m. and ended at midnight, Christmas Day, according to the Georgia State Patrol. There were 685 crashes with 300 injuries and 11 deaths investigated by the Georgia State Patrol (GSP). Other agencies have reported six traffic fatalities, including a fatal two-car collision in Smyrna just before midnight on Monday that claimed the life of a Marietta woman. The fatalities count is much higher than in 2011, when three traffic deaths were reported. In 2011 there were 1,898 accidents with 693 injuries reported by all agencies.
