Athens Man Charged with Intent to Sell Marijuana

Deputies reportedly found 25 bags of marijuana during a traffic stop on US 78 in Oconee County on Thursday. An arrest doesn't mean a conviction.

An Athens man was arrested in Oconee County on Thursday after deputies say they found 25 individual bags of marijuana stuffed in his clothes. The search stemmed from a traffic stop on US 78 around 10 a.m. and Pete Dickens Road initiated by a patrol deputy who noticed a passenger of a burgundy colored Chevy Beretta wasn't wearing a seat belt, according to an incident report. As the deputy approached the passenger's side to speak with the occupants, he says he noticed an odor of green marijuana. A female passenger was issued a warning about the seat belt. The driver was asked to step out of the car while his information was being checked, and the man gave consent for deputies to search the vehicle as well as his person, the report states. …

14 Pounds of Marijuana Found in Athens Man's Luggage During Traffic Stop

Justin Cornish, 28, of Woodlake Drive is charged with trafficking after an Oconee traffic stop.

About 14 pounds of marijuana were found during a traffic stop in Oconee County on Tuesday afternoon, officials said. A deputy spotted a Chevrolet Lumina traveling east on US 78 near its intersection with SR 53 and checked its tag after noticing its excessive window tint, according to a news release from the Oconee Sheriff's Office. A canine searched the vehicle after a search warrant was obtained, honing in on the trunk and a piece of luggage containing the marijuana, the news release noted. Justin Cornish, 28, of Woodlake Drive in Athens was charged with marijuana trafficking and canceled registration.  He was being held at the Oconee County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.
