Selig Enterprises Planning New Development For Armstrong and Dobbs Site in Athens, Ga.

A proposed Walmart is no longer part of the mix.

  Selig Enterprises does plan to build a mixed use development on the former site of Armstrong and Dobbs in downtown Athens. But a Walmart is not going to be one of the many retail establishments there. And neither will a grocery store. According to a press release issued by Selig Enterprises, the company has decided to opt for an anchor tenant of 35,000 square feet--less than half the size of what they proposed in the fall of 2011 when Walmart was the likely big box retailer for the development. "There will no longer be a Walmart," Selig Senior Vice President Jo Ann Chitty told Flagpole Magazine's Blake Aued. It's extremely disappointing that Selig still intends to bulldoze the historic warehouse buildings--especially Jittery Joe's which is a stunning example of adaptive reuse incorporating the talents of our local creative community in a building that embodies the funky vibe that defines Athens for so many outsiders. Closed Snow Tire Building to Open with Craft Brewery in Downtown Athens, Ga.

Creature Comforts will join other local breweries in Athens.

New Brewery Coming to Snow Tire Building in Downtown Athens, Ga.

UGA Alum David Stein wants Creature Comforts Brewery to open in mid-2013.

  The closed Snow Tire building on Hancock is getting a new tenant. Creature Comforts, a brewery, will be run David Stein, the brewer at Twain's Billiards and Taps in Atlanta, according to a story in Atlanta Magazine. The company's Facebook page says it's shooting to open in mid-2013. The former tire operation will include a 30-barrel brewhouse that can produce 6,000 barrels, or 189,000 gallons, of beer the first year.

New Student Complex Planned for Downtown Athens, Ga.

Landmark Properties plans to build at Thomas and Strong streets.

The mixed use development of residential and retail is expected to open in the fall of 2014. The complex will have 610 beds and 24,788 square feet of retail space. Apartments can have from one to five bedrooms, and studios will also be in the mix. The Standard, as the development is called, will have student-oriented amenities, including fitness centers, an infinity pool and a study room and cyber cafe, among others.

"Pay-and-Display" Parking Machines: Staying or Going in Downtown Athens, Ga.?

High-tech machines sometimes frustrate those trying to park and shop.

When the $10,000, solar-powered, blue "pay-and-display" machines appeared in downtown Athens in 2010, they were hailed as a way to "go green," simplify parking and make the sidewalks less cluttered. For some shoppers, however, the machines are a time-consuming hassle at best and a puzzling piece of technology at worst. So the Athens Downtown Development Authority is going to ask the Athens Clarke County Commission whether it should repair an ailing “pay-and-display” machine near Mellow Mushroom on Clayton or replace it with eight individual computerized parking meters. The ADDA board has recommended having the machine removed in favor of the new meters. The Mayor and ACC Commission may vote on the request at its October meeting. Right now…

Ms. Miller doesn't care one way or another what kind of parking machines are being used--that's a matter recommended by the board of directors and then approved by the ACC Commission. The pay-and-display machines did increase parking revenues, and they were expected to do.
