Solid Waste Schedule During the Holidays in Athens, Ga.

The information in this story comes from Athens Clarke County officials.

  Leaf and Limb workers will be in Zone 4 this week, according to Athens Clarke County Officials. This zone includes: Glen Oaks, Holly Hills, Kingswood, Wood Lake, Wickersham Plantation, Stonehenge, Deerfield, Holiday Estates, High Ridge, Woodhaven, Westwood Hills, and Huntington Park. Next week, the offices will be close on Monday and Tuesday. Leaf and limb collection will be suspended the remainder of that week. The following week, collection will resume on Monday in Zone 5, but the office will be closed on Tuesday, January 1. Collection will resume for the remainder of the week. Leaf and limb service in Athens-Clarke is a good example of the tough choices we have to make.

I'm looking out my window at a big pile of branches on my curb. Compared to my neighbors, I'd say my limb pile is at least in the 95th percentile, and frankly, I'm considering splitting it up into two smaller piles, one on each side of the house. My stack of branches is, as they used to say, gi-normous. There're a couple of reasons for that. First, we here at Chez Matheny have finally decided to get serious about the yard. It's going to be quite a project, and parts of the yard are still rainforest-esque in size and fecundity. But more importantly, it's been about three months since we've seen hide or hair of a leaf and limb truck trundling down the street. Valerie has the right idea. Using gas-guzzling trucks to haul away yard waste is a questionable practice environmentally. I try to find places to let leaves and limbs decay naturally on my property. Natural decomposition replaces soil nutrients and creates future top soil.
