Police Search for Hit-and-Run Driver in Oak Street Accident in Athens, Ga.

  Athens Clarke County Police are searching for the driver of a red Mazda pickup that allegedly hit and severely injured Emily Bowman as she walked on the grassy should of Oak Street with a companion early Saturday morning. Emily Bowman was in Athens to attend a friend's birthday party. She remains in a coma at Athens Regional, where she was taken after the incident. According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, the pickup is registered to a 22-year-old Cartersville man, whose mother lives in Watkinsville and father in Lawrenceville. Neither the man nor his parents are cooperating with police, the story says. Also, police found a bottle of liquor inside the truck, the story says, and empty beer cans in the truck bed. Want to speak on Big & Little Boxes?

Come to tonight's 6 p.m. corridor study meeting at Oconee Street Methodist.

  The Athens Clarke County Planning Department will hold the third and final session tonight to gain input on the re-designing of Oak/Oconee streets and Prince Avenue corridotrs. Selig Enterprises proposes investing $80 million in building a mixed-use development that would be on Oconee Street, so tonight's meeting seems especialy timely. Many in the community object, in general, to the gigantic footprint a Big Box retailer would make on the urban landscape, while other oppose Wal Mart specifically. The corridot studies were begun in 2008 at the request of then mayor Heidi Davidson and the ACC Commission.
