Caterpillar on Track to Take Occupancy of New Athens-Oconee Plant in March

Plant manager Todd Henry says a grand opening will be held in November.

  In just a matter of weeks, Caterpillar will be moving into its new plant, currently under construction in Bogart. At the annual meeting of the Oconee County Chamber of Commerce, plant manager Todd Henry said excitement is brewing as March 1 approaches. Henry was the evening's keynote speaker. It seems they are bucking the trend. Manufacturing costs--mostly labor--is much cheaper in Georgia, and they did get many tax breaks. Let's hope all the suppliers come and locate in Athens!   more ›

Chamber Announces Candidate Forum

All four candidates for the Georgia House District 113 special election have been invited to participate in the June 16 forum to be held at North Oconee High School.

Residents of Georgia House District 113 will have two chances to meet with and ask questions of the four candidates running in the June 21 special election. The Oconee County Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a candidate forum on June 16 at North Oconee High School. Tim Bryant, news director at 1340 WGAU Radio, will serve as the moderator, Chamber President J.R. Whitfield said. "As people come in, they will be given a piece of paper to write questions," he explained.  The papers will be submitted to Bryant who will read the questions to the candidates, he said. Stephanie, you are not exactly correct in the order of events transpiring as far as the Chamber debate, as I had not yet received the invitation, but went ahead and called their office just now, and they did mail it yesterday, and I went ahead an accepted the invitation.
