Got Trees? The Local Government Does, in Athens, Ga.

Athens-Clarke County has two opportunities to replant trees along the public right-of-way in front of residents' urban properties in Five Points.

  1. Annual Canopy Replacement Plantings: this program plants large canopy, balled-and-burlapped trees in spaces that can accommodate them. We use a variety of species including American elm, tulip poplar, oaks, river birch, and maples. These high-quality trees are only available in locations that have enough room to support their roots and canopy without interfering with adjacent sidewalks, sight-triangles, or utilities. The trees are 6-10 feet tall and 2-inches in diameter at the time of planting. Over the last few years, we have successfully planted trees in the Boulevard, Cobbham, Homewood Hills and West Gate neighborhoods. Up to 25 trees are available in this program.
