First Person Project Celebrates Stories of Love this February

The Richard B. Russell Library's celebrates Valentines Day through new oral history series

  Do you remember the first time you fell in love? This February the First Person Project, an oral history series documenting the experiences of everyday Georgians, invites participants to tackle the topic of love. How did you meet your spouse? What do you remember about your worst breakup or most awkward date? Find an interview partner and join us to record stories about love, loss, and relationships in celebration of Valentine’s Day.   Six sets of partners will be accepted for this First Person Project session, scheduled for Friday, February 8th between 9:00am and 4:00pm. UGA Special Collections Libraries Launch Community Docent Program

Special Collections Libraries seek community volunteers for new docent program, to begin training in February 2013.

  The University of Georgia’s Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries is now accepting applications for participants in its docent program.   The Docent Corps is a skilled group of volunteers who provide tours of the library galleries to visitors, ranging from fifth graders to adults. Docents are trained to highlight permanent and rotating exhibitions and to help increase awareness of the many resources offered by the three special collections libraries: the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, the Walter J. Brown Media Archive and Peabody Awards Collections and the Richard B. New oral history series documents the experiences of everyday Georgians

  The Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies will launch the First Person Project, a new oral history series documenting the experiences of everyday Georgians, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Richard B. Russell Building Special Collections Libraries.   Modeled roughly on StoryCorps, a national initiative partnered with National Public Radio and the Library of Congress, First Person Project is smaller in scale but similar in concept, providing tools to would-be oral history interviewers and interviewees, including tips on how to create questions and conduct interviews.  “The project was inspired by the belief that everyone is an eyewitness to history and that everyone, sometimes with a little encouragement, has a …

Athens League of Women Voters Deposits Historic Materials at UGA's Russell Library

Former members of the League gathered May 18 in Athens, GA to celebrate the opening of the special collection of historic documents and memorabilia.

Former members of the Athens League of Women Voters gathered May 18 to celebrate the opening of the Athens League of Women Voters Records Collection at the University of Georgia Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies. Carrie Chapman Catt founded the League of Women Voters in 1920 during the convention of the National American Woman Suffrage Association. Created as a non-partisan political organization, the League was dedicated to empowering citizens to play an active role in government through education and advocacy. The Athens League became an official chapter of the national organization in 1948.
